DECEMBER 2024 Transcript
I know December is a busy time of year, so I’ll keep this brief and focused on what matters most to you.
First, I’m excited to invite you to our Holiday Open House on Thursday, December 5th, here in the Overland Park office from 4 to 6 p.m. It’ll be a fun event where we’ll introduce a concept we’re embracing for 2025 called Healthy-ish. This theme is all about finding that sweet spot between what’s healthy, socially acceptable, and real-life practical.
On another note, let’s address an important topic: health insurance. Starting January 1, 2025, Heartland Weight Loss will no longer operate under traditional health insurance coverage. This decision wasn’t made lightly, but the healthcare landscape is shifting, particularly in obesity treatment. Unfortunately, we’re seeing coverage for anti-obesity medications and related office visits decline.
For example, both the federal employee health plan and the Kansas State employee health plan have made changes that will make anti-obesity medications much more expensive in 2025. Similarly, many non-government, employer-sponsored plans are pulling back on coverage, and our local carriers have already begun denying treatment for obesity-related visits altogether. It’s disheartening, and despite my efforts to advocate for better coverage, these massive companies are making decisions with little regard for how they impact individuals like us.
That’s why it’s crucial to thoroughly review your 2025 health plan now. If you’re relying on insurance for obesity treatment or medications, check the details carefully—especially exclusions. Determine if medications are covered under a copay system or if they require you to meet your deductible first. Look up the tier of your medications to calculate costs for the upcoming year.
If things look challenging, work with us this month to create a bridge that will help you avoid surprises in January. Planning ahead can make a big difference during an already stressful time of year.
And speaking of stress—try to enjoy some of the chaos this December! Take moments for self-care, focus on the people around you, and don’t let the season’s food-centric marketing distract you from your health goals. Sugary treats might add a little fun, but remember: poor health isn’t fun. Balance is key.
As always, thank you for trusting us with your health journey. We look forward to seeing you at the Holiday Open House and continuing to build a supportive, thriving community together.
